Christmas time is here
Happiness and cheer
Fun for all that children call
Their favorite time of the yearSnowflakes in the air
Carols everywhere
Olden times and ancient rhymes
Of love and dreams to shareSleigh bells in the air
Beauty everywhere
Yuletide by the fireside
And joyful memories thereChristmas time is here
We’ll be drawing near
Oh, that we could always see
Such spirit through the year
Oh, that we could always see
Such spirit through the year…
It’s here, and I’m not terribly excited.
When David dropped me off at my grandparents’ house, I immediately noticed how sparse the Christmas decorations were. There are only lights up on the eaves of the roof, nothing more.
Just last year, my grandpa went all out with the decorations. There used to be animatronic light-up reindeer prancing around, Santa ho-ho-hoing on his sleigh on the roof, and a fully lit Christmas tree on the front lawn.
I used to consider my grandpa a sentimental old fool, going overboard with holiday decorations even though us kids no longer lived there. But the absence of the usual extravaganza at my grandpa’s house reminds me of perhaps the main reason this Christmas will be lacking.
We all miss her. And it seems like it’s becoming more obvious in our everyday lives as the year comes to a close.
