Literally. I’m on my iPad at the Western Addition Branch Library in San Francisco. I also just realized I have never actually attempted a post via the WordPress app.
And here we are.
Anyway, today is my first day volunteering as a “technology assistant” for the San Francisco Public Library. So far, I’ve helped patrons with the fancy multi-functional device, which I have already dubbed the Black Beast. It’s fairly easy to use in theory, but it has a host of problems, most of which I won’t elaborate on. Essentially, it’s a printer, scanner and copier. I generally deal with user error and simple computer troubleshooting.
Most of all, I’m pleased to see a library so busy. All the computer stations are occupied, and the reference desk is fairly busy too. Of course, I have a ton of downtime as well, hence this blog post and my sorry attempts at homework, but eh, I have no complaints. Time is passing quickly and before I know it, I’ll have to head over to my other job.
I plan to fit about 6-8 volunteer hours per week into my already crazy schedule. Volunteering here allows me to observe the typical machinations of a local library from a new vantage point, and it will allow me to meet more people who work in the library world.
Here’s to new beginnings!
